McNaughton's Nurseries - History

In the early 1900's William McNaughton Sr. immigrated from Ireland and began working for a local New Jersey plant nursery. During the year following his move to the United States, Mr. McNaughton began developing a thirteen acre parcel of land located in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
In 1929 McNaughton's Nursery was officially opened as a combination wholesale/retail landscape nursery. As the business grew, William McNaughton Sr. took an active role in area associations as an officer of the New Jersey Association of Nurserymen and as governor for the American Association of Nurserymen.
Through the years following its start, McNaughton's Nursery continued to develop and in 1965, Mr. McNaughton's son William Jr. entered the family business. William McNaughton Jr. had graduated from Delaware Valley College and would soon take over the landscape nursery operations.
In 1966 William Sr. passed away and William Jr. assumed the role of President and General Manager of McNaughton's Nursery.
An additional 90 acres was soon purchased in Tabernacle, New Jersey to expand the company's production capabilities. Soon after the growing operation became known as Indian Mills Nursery. About five years later, Bill's brother Noble took over the operations of Indian Mills Nursery. In addition to the production expansion, a garden center was also initiated on the Cherry Hill property.
In 1973 increased demand for wholesale plant material necessitated that a re-wholesale division occupy a major portion of the property in Cherry Hill. Again in 1976 another 100 acres was added to production and later another 240 acres until the total acreage of Indian Mills presently totals approximately 450 acres.
With the South Jersey area developing at a rapid rate, Bill McNaughton foresaw the increased need for horticultural services to both residential and commercial clientele.
Over the years an extensive service program has been established with a reputation for premium quality and service. There are presently ten crews servicing the landscape, lawn maintenance, lawn care and irrigation needs of the South Jersey area.
In addition to developing the family business, Bill McNaughton has also taken an active role in area associations. Bill was actively involved as a representative of the New Jersey Association of Nurserymen of which he was President and show chairman in the same year.
Since his participation in the Nursery Associations, Bill has again focused his full attention on the development of the family business. Presently between McNaughton's Nursery and Indian Mills Nursery there are approximately 165 employees during peak season. Most recently a second state-of -the-art garden center has been built in Somers Point, New Jersey to continue the growth and leadership of the company.
Bill McNaughton was also just named the New Jersey Nursery and Landscape Assoc. Nurseryman of the Year for 2002.

McNaughton's Nursery, in order to increase exposure to the quality of work which the company offers, has participated in the prestigious Philadelphia Flower Show as a major exhibitor since 1986. McNaughton's is currently planning the fourth annual Somers Point Flower Show to showcase their talents through the new garden center. With its strong past and progressive approach to the future, McNaughton's will continue to be a leader in the horticultural industry for years to come.
